A special shout-out to writer extraordinaire (and father, flanker, ref), Buzz McClain, for featuring this article in his blog first.
It seems those Longhorn ruggers set a lofty goal - a National Championship in the D-1AA. Their alumni, the Texas Exes, support them with an endowment designated for scholarships. The headline reads Texas Rugby Eyes Championship, Starts Scholarship.
I think Butch Neuenschwander - Texas' coach - is a great guy. As a referee, he tends to talk more than whistle (at least, he does in those few matches I have seen him referee) and that means a lot to me. So, it's good to see competence and consistency in the Texas coaching. I've always said that if Texas can develop a solid rugby program with consistent coaching, the sleeping giant of the TRU (now SWRC) will awake.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I am an Aggie - born and raised in BCS, attended A&M, coached rugby at A&M, and almost everyone in my family worked on campus at some time. These are the first positive words I have ever wrote about "t.u." It didn't hurt, much!
