Severe weather across the central Texas and Houston-area caused the cancellation of several scheduled matches for this Saturday. Nevertheless several teams had their rugby day!
Friday night's action had St. Thomas travelling to Round Rock where they swept Stony Point in two matches - 48-0 (Varsity) and 73-0 (JV).
The BARC Bulldogs travelled to Austin's Burr Field to blank AAHS 36-0. BARC Coach and President David Yeoman expressed his gratitude to the hosts for a fun game and a great day of rugby.
Westlake beat Alamo Heights in San Antonio by a score of 28-14.
The Katy Barbarians overcame Strake Jesuit in two friendly matches on Saturday. Katy U19 beat Strake Varsity 38-7 and Katy U17 topped the Strake JV 39-5.
The Woodlands vs St. Pius X matches were cancelled due to weather as well, but our friends at T5 and a 1/2 reported a recent, successful second camp with The Woodlands Youth Rugby with 60+ attendees. The Woodlands' coaching staff had posted two full 23-man squads for the matches versus St Pius X. It is a tribute to The Woodlands organization that they are recruiting and maintaining such numbers!
In collegiate women's action, the Texas at Texas A&M match was cancelled due to severe weather. However, the Lobos of New Mexico created their own storm in Lubbock by defeating the Red Raiders 39-17. Referee Fred Yarger reports:
The remaining SWCRC matches will be rescheduled due to severe weather .
In Texas Division 2 play, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks made the trek to a windy San Angelo to beat Angelo State 24-13. Referee Stephen Hewer reported it as a "tale of two halves" in which the team with the wind at their back scored and the Lumberjacks realized the most of that opportunity.
Texas A&M's Division 2 team made the trip to Lubbock only to be blanked by Texas Tech 52-0.
The University of Dallas was shut out in Austin by St. Edward's 32-0.
While Midwestern State received a 28-0 forfeit because Tyler Junior College's team from the fall is now defunct, UTSA missed the opportunity to grab second place in Texas Division 3. The Roadrunners beat the Cardinals of Lamar by a score of 12-10. This dropped UTSA into 3rd place and bumped Lamar up into 4th.
UTD's 74-0 drubbing of SMU places them firmly in the lead for Division 3. UTD's flanker Zachary Ussery and 8-man Steven Hale had a big day defensively on a day coach Tony Wagner lauded his team as the defensive heroes. However, UTD's backline got into space often and made it count. Captain and outside center Nathan Sohadaseni found in-goal four times, inside center Dominic Prestia and scrumhalf Cameron Broussard dotted down a brace each, flyhalf Vince Dutton scored a try and five conversions, and first year center Brandon Miller - on for Prestia - earned his zulu. UTD's depth grew on the day as well as Coach Wagner used all of his substitutes.
The Texas D3 semi-finals schedule is tentative at the moment, but we should see #3 UTSA take a little jaunt to Wichita Falls to tangle with #2 Midwestern State on Feb 18 and #4 Lamar travel to Richardson to face #1 UTD on Feb 19.
For any who have missed the announcement, Strake Jesuit in Houston is hosting a collegiate recruiting combine on February 19

On a cold, windy day the University of New Mexico Lady Lobos showed their backline superiority (by) defeating (the) Lady Raiders of Texas Tech University 39-17 in Lubbock. Playing short-handed with only 14, Tech held their own in the first half, going into the break down only 12-15 to UNM. Tech controlled the scrums throughout the match, but were unable to translate that into tries. UNM capitalized on poor tackling by Tech, breaking open the second half with three unanswered tries. Both teams played well & under control. A succession of injuries sustained by Tech resulted in the match being shortened by several minutes at the request of both captains. In SouthWest Collegiate Rugby Conference (SWCRC) action, TCU handily defeated Baylor 73-5.
The remaining SWCRC matches will be rescheduled due to severe weather .
