ARC 7s in Austin, TX
Two big stories percolated from Austin this weekend: 1) A&M's growing hardware collection and 2) Texas sat their starting 7.
Texas A&M went 4-0 in both the Varsity and JV divisions of the ARC 7s tournament in Austin, TX. The Aggie Varsity squad outscored their opponents 150-22, while the JV squad went 112-24. Both squads showed their fitness in the 10-minute-halves finals by dotting 6+ tries each. This places Texas A&M firmly in the lead for the ARC 7s Championship going into next weekend's Grand Final Tournament in Dallas, TX. Through two ARC 7s tournaments and one SEC 7s Qualifying Tournament, Aggie Rugby is 36-3.
However, the Longhorns held back on playing their 1st 7 players in Austin. Now, while I disagree with this decision philosophically (Collegiate 7s players need all the minutes they can get for purposes of experience.), I cannot fault the Texas coaches for their reasons: 1)Rest the top players going into the ARC 7s Grand Final Tournament, 2)Develop needed depth by playing the next level of ruggers, and 3)Forego possible injuries in a tournament that, because they missed the OU 7s, is not going to help them win the ARC 7s trophy.
What does this mean for next weekend in Dallas? I'll expound on this later this week.
SWWC 7s in Dallas
The UT Women have qualified for a bid to compete at the USAR NC7C in College Station in fine fashion, winning all five games by a total of 148-61. This will mark Texas' second appearance in the USAR NC7C. They got to take home hardware last year, no doubt they will return to Austin with hardware this year.
