Texas College Rugby Roundup - Nov 16-17

SWC

Nov 16 - St Edward's at Texas State - A tale of two teams beset by difficulties (TxSt - injuries & ineligibility, SEU - injuries & other commitments), yet neither taking the other lightly. Both coaches said their (relatively young) teams approached Friday night ready for battle and got exactly what they expected.

SEU Coach Brannen Ellyson praised Texas State's ball-handling. It was tough for his team to contain an offense that moved the ball with few handling errors. Additionally, Texas State doesn't mind being in contact.

State struck first when sophomore hooker, Joe Boyd, dotted down at 12 minutes.   However, the Hilltoppers marked the board next with a try by sophomore wing, Jim Kelly (New Hampshire), 15 minutes into the match. Flyhalf & Captain Andor Benyi (Durban, SA) slotted the conversion to put SEU ahead.

Then it began raining cards - yellows for SEU at 25 and 29 minutes and State at 27 & 50 minutes and a red to SEU at the 48th minute. These seemed to settle down the two teams and they decided to find the try zone, instead.

SEU struck first with sophomore flanker, Alex Forrer (Whitefish Bay, WI), scoring at 60 minutes (no conversion). Then Boyd captured his second try of the game at 65 minutes. Flanker Cory Houston put State out in front at 70 minutes with a try. Three minutes later, freshman substitute, Juan Alday (Bordeaux, FR), reclaimed SEU's lead with another try. Finally, Benyi slotted a penalty kick in the 78th minute to create the final score of 20-15 in favor of SEU.

Both sides' coaches decided on SEU's senior tight-head, Lorenzo Rubio Beltran (Madrid, SP), as the Man of the Match. And this match got SEU some attention, the Hilltoppers are now #24 on RugbyMag's D-1AA Top 25 (subscription required).

Texas State next plays Texas in a rescheduled Thursday night match on Dec 6 in San Marcos. SEU does not have an SWC match until next semester, also against Texas.

Nov 17 - Texas Christian at Rice University - TCU traveled to Houston this weekend after two good wins. The Frogs are a fit team and they have plenty of good coaching this year. But they ran into a blue wall of Owls that was having none of what the Frogs dished out to the Longhorns and the Cougars. Rice made a statement of intent to dominate with a score of 62-26 (as reported by the referee).
TCU has the put-in. Good looking scrum-to-be.
Rice is back to prominence with Mario Botha at the helm. If you want to see a great college rugby match, be at Rice's pitch on February 2nd to watch the Owls take on the Hilltoppers of St Edward's. That should be the SWC's match of the season.

Nov 17 - North Texas v UHouston at HASP. UNT traveled well on Saturday. UH defended well. This match was close up until the last few minutes. UNT led 12-0 at the half. UH might have had two more tries if they walked the pitch before the match (the soccer lines confused them and they touched down two outside of the in-goal). UNT won this one 40-14. UNT's Coach, Art Anderson, says that UH has a lot of good talent, they just need to stay together to make it work.

Nov 17-18 - The Texas A&M Women's RFC traveled the short distance to Huntsville to defeat the Lady Bearkats 19-7 on Saturday morning. The Aggies then returned to College Station to meet defeat at the hands of the Texas A&M Rugby Old Girls on Sunday morning. According to former Aggie Prop, Traci Schmidtke Young, the Rugby Old Girls remain undefeated!
