Texas HS Rugby Round-up Feb 17-18

A lot of action this weekend and a lot of cancellations due to weather and field conditions. Plano was scheduled to meet McAllen somewhat midway at Burr field on Sunday. That match was likely cancelled due to field conditions, especially after Wendy Young blew the final whistle between Austin & Ft. Worth men's clubs. Her pics of that match left me wondering how she differentiated green from gold on the day!

Friday night lit up for several schools.

St. Thomas continued their dominant ways with a 78-3 win over neighboring Memorial HS. Eight Eagles found in-goal, but Memorial never stopped fighting for the ball.

Kingwood topped St. Pius X 5-3 in a close, muddy affair. The tight, defensive night was going the Panthers' way until a late knock-on gave Kingwood the go-ahead score from a 5-meter scrum.

Stony Point put up a fight against Jesuit Dallas in two matches, but dropped the varsity match 36-5 and the JV match 29-0. These clubs are well-coached and defensively savvy. With the chance of rain at 100% it was a "mud bowl" and therefore lots of fun for the boys. Of course, Jesuit wore their white jerseys and they are still trying to get the mud out.
This year, Stony Point is helping out the Cedar Ridge HS rugby club get good experience towards becoming a full team by having them combine with the Stony Point players in the JV matches. Coach Rock reports that the majority of the JV side right now IS Cedar Ridge. This innovative idea is something that other coaches should take note of and perhaps try to copy if neighboring schools want to start a club, but just are not at the full side level, yet.

Varsity scoring:
Jesuit Dallas
Andrew Donovan (Try), Julian Fragoso (Try), Brendan Metcalf (2 Tries), Lamar Mott (1 Try), Chris Steiner (1 Try, 3 Cons)
Stony Point
Sedrick Chandler (Try)

JV Scoring:
Jesuit Dallas
Emmanuel Salazar (2 Tries), Austin Gustafson (Try), Bennett Rofsky (Try), Matt Scheibel (Try), Francis Rey Hipolito (2 Cons)

We can expect great things out of these players at this level and at the next.

The Metroplex saw Allen HS defeat Coppell HS 33-12.

On Saturday, the Bay Area Rugby Club hosted The Woodlands youth clubs. BARC couldn't field a full side and was augmented by youth players from Galveston. But The Woodlands proved dominant in a lop-sided 80-0 affair that featured many teaching moments.

I really hope I can get off of work next Saturday. I'd love to go watch Katy and The Woodlands battle it out before heading out to watch Extreme Midget Wrestling (my wife won tickets on the radio) with my bro-in-law. From one slugfest to another!

Westlake blanked Lake Travis in Varsity action 43-0 but got tied up in a defensive battle during the JV match 5-5.  Westlake has proved to be an offensive juggernaut this season. Lake Travis does NOT like to lose. These teams are scheduled to face-off again soon. This score should not be so lop-sided on that day.
