Univ. of Texas win SWC 7s Championships

SWC Press Release

San Marcos, TX - September 30, 2013 - Univ. of Texas win SWC 7s Championships

After a double-elimination tournament held at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX on Sept. 28th, the Texas Longhorns defeated Univ. of North Texas (UNT) to win it second consecutive SWC 7's Championship.

SWC Commissioner, Clayton Jewett was on hand and kept the tournament running smoothly and on time. Teams and players were checked-in by 8:30am and play began at 9am. As the day progressed and the brackets began to fill out, by the half-way point, SFA, Lamar, Rice and Univ. of Houston had been eliminated, leaving UT, UNT,Texas Christian University (TCU) & Texas State (TXST) still in the hunt. But in the end, it was UT that rose to the top ultimately by giving UNT their two losses to take home the SWC Championship. SWC Discipline Director, Scot Courtney noted, "The level of play on the field and the 7s programs at the various SWC Clubs generally, have clearly improved substantially since last season inaugural championships, but UT remains at the top of that paradigm. UT invests heavily and dedicate substantial time and effort in their 7s program and it shows on the field."

Seedings were based on the clubs' performances at four (4) prior "test tournaments", held at Lamar Univ., UofH, UNT & TCU in the weeks leading up to the SWC 7s Championships. SWC Commissioner Jewett stated, "In the end, it came down to the two top seeded teams (UNT & UT). We congratulate UT, and are confident that the Longhorns are strong contenders for a National Championship. We look forward to UT representing the SWC at the USA National Championships."

Courtney added, "It has been a successful 7s season for our Clubs and feel UT will represent SWC very well at Nationals. We now turn to XVs with the SWC XVs Invitational hosted by Austin Huns on October 12th and will begin SWC Conference play by the end of October. Many of our Clubs will also be competing in cross-conference matches with Lonestar and Allied Conference opponents, but out-of-state opponents as well, such as LSU, OK State & Oklahoma on the slate. We are looking forward to a very competitive season to come. Congrats again to UT."
